Huge Olympic upset: Germany tosses out Sweden, plays Canada in the semis

The 2018 men’s Olympic hockey quarterfinals are over, and one huge upset opens up the road ahead for Canada.

Last night, the USA lost to the Czechs in a shootout, and then the Russians did the expected and destroyed Norway 6-1.  That sets up one semifinal.

The other semifinal will feature Canada, who won a nail-biter over Finland, versus the winner of the biggest hockey upset at this Olympics.

Canada, who lost Ben Scrivens in the second period when he was bowled over by a Finn who had been knocked into him, carried a one-goal lead through to the end of the game against a Finnish team that just never seemed to control the puck. Kevin Poulin played most of the game in net, coming in on no notice and turning in a solid shutout performance on limited shots.

Meanwhile, the Germans stunned the Swedes by going out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. The Swedes waited until the third period to score, tying the game up at three all. But less than two minutes into overtime, Patrick Reimer won the game for Germany and sent the Swedes out of the medal round.

Germany, who had notched the biggest upset by beating Switzerland to get into the quarters, have now killed the giant barring Canada from the gold medal game.

But not so fast. Canada has to play the Germans, and obviously, they aren’t easy to beat.
