We voted, and the results were 8 to 4, William Nylander over Mitch Marner for spot number two.  No one voted any spot but two or three for these two players.

I wanted to rank them both 2.5 and have done with it, but I did put Nylander over Marner.  If you asked me today, I might flip that around. Tomorrow, who knows?

I think it’s pretty clear that Nylander had better results in his first year in the NHL than Marner, but that’s one set of games, not the whole story.  And the difference is very small.  They are so alike in so many ways, that deciding between them is tough.  Let’s look at some of the details to help us out.

  • Marner is younger by one year; their birth dates are four days apart
  • Nylander has four years of pro hockey; Marner has one
  • They are listed as the same height, and within 10 lbs in weight; LOL
  • Nylander played tougher competition; Marner had defensively challenged linemates
  • Marner stepped into the NHL straight out of four minute junior hockey shifts
  • Nylander is likely going to be a centre someday
  • They are neck and neck for most boring interview on the Leafs
  • Marner had one of the highest on-ice shooting percentages; Nylander had one of the lowest/

I’m still going with 2.5 for each.  But you get to decide: Who is best? But not just in one category, oh no, you can vote over and over for whoever you like best.
