On day 2 of the Memorial Cup we saw a clash of champions. The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, QMJHL winners, took on the WHL Champion Brandon Wheat Kings. These two teams were looking to start their tournament off with a win, to keep pace with Friday nights winners, the OHL's London Knights.
The Wheat Kings quickly established themselves in the game, wanting to show up strong and proud in front of a rival WHL crowd, Reid Duke ('14 MIN) scoring just under three minutes into the game.
The Huskies would take about three times longer to get on the board with Anthony-John Greer ('15 COL) scoring after a beautiful pass from Jérémy Lauzon ('15 BOS). The tie would only last four minutes, when Gabriel Fontaine ('16 Draft) pots on to give the Huskies the lead.
The QMJHL champs would not be satisfied being up by one. A minute later Timo Meier ('15 SJ) nets a rebound and puts the Huskies up by 2 to close out the first period.
The Wheat Kings would let their frustrations play in the first period as they pick up six minutes in penalties, allowing Philippe Myers (undrafted) to score on the power play, to give the Huskies a 4-1 lead.

Timo Meier would add his second of the game and the Huskies would make their lead four to end the second period.
We would see about a penalty a minute in the third period, with 14 minutes being given out in the first 8 minutes of the game, surprisingly the majority going to the leading Huskies.
Brandon would attempt a comeback in the third period, Tyler Coulter (undrafted) would score on one of the may powerplays in the third, and John Quenneville ('14 NJ) would score at the 12 minute mark.

The attempt is futile though, as the Huskies shut down Brandon the rest of the game and take a 5-3 victory to kick off their Memorial Cup.
Three Stars of the game:
1 - Time Meier, Rouyn-Noranda
2 - Francis Perron, Rouyn-Noranda
3 - Ivan Provorov, Brandon
The next game of the tournament is Sunday night, and features Host Red Deer Rebels taking on the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
