Will these kids be heroes or footnotes? There's something interesting about watching the draft long after many turn their attention elsewhere: someday that kid no one knows anything about might score a series winning goal despite the long odds of him ever even suiting up to play in the NHL. The Leafs first selection was #43, acquired by trading Jimmy Hayes to the Chicago Blackhawks to unite him with his brother. The Leafs drafted Brad Ross from the Portland Winterhawks where he had 68pts in 71gp.
In the third round with their own pick the Leafs grabbed Gregg McKegg from the OHL's Erie Otters. McKegg scored 85pts in 67gp (1.26ppg) in his draft year. Compare that to Nazem Kadri who put up 78 in 56 (1.39ppg) in his draft year. No one is saying McKegg is as good as a guy like Kadri but he looks promising for a third rounder.
With the 79th pick the Leafs drafted a Norwegian player named Sondre Olden out of the Swedish Jr. league. Olden's a big kid with some talent. Hopefully he makes the jump across the pond to train under the Leafs' supervision.
Late in the fourth round the Leafs also grabbed Petter Granberg out of the Swedish Jr. league, before moving the 122nd pick in the fifth round to grab Mike Brown from the Anaheim Ducks. Brian Burke must be apologizing for giving the Ducks both Blake and Toskala by tossing them a pick for a plugger.
Finally in the later rounds of the draft the Leafs picked up Sam Carrick, a center from the Brampton Battalion, with pick #144. With the #146 pick the Leafs grabbed a guy identified by NHL.com as being a "sleeper pick" in Daniel Brodin from Djurgardens. Finally Toronto grabbed Josh Nicholls at #182.
What are your thoughts PPPers? Have a favorite new prospect? Hate somebody we picked up? Anyone you wish we would have grabbed? Wish somebody had gotten traded? Let yourself be heard in the comments.
